From the Editor in Chief The First International English Language Teaching Conference was hosted on May 2-4 2001 by the Department of English Language Teaching, Faculty of Education, Eastern Mediterranean University, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

The theme of the first conference was searching for Quality in English Language Teaching. The conference was the first one to be organized in the Mediterranean region which attracted many famous scholars not only from the region but from all over the world. The conference hosted 42 participants from 27 nations. Scholars from Hong Kong, Norway, Turkey, the USA, North Cyprus, China, Egypt & Malaysia shared their quality papers. Seventy-five studies were presented and 4 papers were accepted for publication. Besides the presentations, three plenaries were given by Prof. William Littlewood, Prof.Jean Faust Zukowski and Prof. Cem Alptekin.

All the presentations were directly linked with the theme of the conference quality, with respect to both theory and practice. The topics of the presentations can be summarized as follows:  

• Alternatives in ELT methodology

• Teacher education

• Teacher development

• Re-definition of in-service training

• New ways and techniques in the evaluation of practice teaching

• Alternative approaches to syllabus construction

• Enhancing ELT methodology through the application of literature

• Improving techniques in basic ELT courses

• New ways of assessment in ELT classes

• Creativity in ELT classes

• Aspect of cognition in ELT methodology

• Alternatives in testing grammar and oral communication skills

 The Second International ELT Conference is being planned to be held by the Department of ELT, Faculty of Education, and EMU in May 2001. The theme of the conference will be decided soon and announced through EMU webpage (http://www.emu.edu.tr), ELT Department homepage (http://elt.emu.edu.tr), Lincom Europe and their web page (http://www.lincom.), the Linguist List (http://www.linguist.list.org), TESOL (http://www.tesol.org), ELT Journal, UK, and other related organizations.

 We shall be very happy to host you in the 200 conference.
